Merchant Navy fleet include Passenger ships, Tanker ships, cargo ships, bulk carriers, container ships, barge carrying ships etc. The key tasks performed are in three basic areas of a ship: Deck, Engine, and Service Department. The deck officers include the captain, chief officer, second officer, third officer and other junior officers. The engine department consists of chief engineer, radio officer, electrical officer and junior engineers. The remuneration is high though varies from company to company, nature of the vessel, country, seniority etc. With the ever increasing number of shipping lines job opportunities are sure to grow in large numbers throughout the world.
HOW DO I JOIN?
The minimum eligibility is 10+2 or an equivalent examination with physics, chemistry and mathematics. The candidate should also pass a medical fitness test for sea service under standard norms and with eyesight 6/6 with no colour blindness. Candidates wishing to enter the navigational and engineering fields of merchant navy need to complete a Bachelor’s degree in nautical science or marine engineering, before they can enter service, though they may slightly vary according to university and country. In-service officers and personnel’s can update their technical skills and gain certifications through courses offered by world class universities and institutions that are most sought after the world over
