5 Things that will help you land that dream job in Sweden

si_work_og_logo_450

Sweden, a country in the forefront of technology and innovation has always been a favored choice of students looking for futuristic programs in all most all disciplines, especially in engineering.  If at all there is a slight dampener, it is that general notion that finding a job there is a bit of struggle.  Though this is true to some extent, it is not at all that difficult either, as Sweden does have a labor shortage list and looks for international workers to fill these roles. Sweden is a great place to start your career as innovative, international companies are found throughout the country.

However, one should bear in mind that recruitment in Swedish companies, does take a little longer compared to other parts of the world, but it has its own reasons that works in favor of the employees. Swedish jobs are highly paid which is one reason behind the wait and act policy adopted by companies while recruiting an immigrant. since they are hiring people at a high salary, it is quite normal from their part to ensure that they are getting the best person in, as a hire and fire policy is virtually nonexistent in Sweden due to stringent norms and strong unions, making termination virtually impossible, which means once you land a job you are sure to have a secure and steady career with excellent pay and perks.

Now that you know what to expect in Sweden, let’s get to business and discuss what would work as far as getting that coveted first job is concerned.

1 Learn the language – This sound a bit too harsh, but it would certainly help your cause. It is better to pick up Swedish bit by bit right from the first couple of weeks, as this gradual process can give you enough verbal armor to strike a conversation with a local.  Though this may seem trivial this is how it works and matters a lot when you are job hunting or looking for an internship later. Though you might still land a job with your English strength, knowing Swedish, even a street smart version can make the difference.

2 Job hunting can start early

Whether you are looking for a fulltime job, part time or an internship program, it is better to start the process early enough without waiting for the completion of your program. Though the recruiting season varies depending on the domain, it is worth noting that employers tend to notify vacancies, well before a couple of months before actually filling up the vacancies. This is the same in the case of all most all domains. The onus lies on you to apply before hand and not wait for the last week, unlike the type of job recruitment companies back in India follow. Graduate training programs offered by Multinational companies can offer you the much deserved break, provided you apply at the right time.   Start ups are great platforms to launch your career.  Sweden have large number of startup with ample space for young legs,  so stay positive there are no dearth of opportunities.

3   Networking is the buzz word

How much of networking is right, there is no tailor made answer.  More the better, as getting to know people at the right place can give you an entry,  which won’t be otherwise possible and also would help you project as a person who can easily jell with the Swedish population.  This   is highly desires as any prospective employer would love to have a person who can adapt to the culture and surrounding and at the same time offer a newer perspective being an immigrant. Striking a conversation with people at cafes, industry events etc can get you valuable contacts, as contacts can do tricks which years of toil can’t.

4 Presenting your best self, before the employer

Swedes judge you by what you speak or the picture you give about yourself.  In short what you speak can make or mar your career, whether be it in your curriculum vitae, interviews, casual chit chats or at the time of networking.   Though it is always desirable to put your best foot forward,   being original   is equally important.  A potential employer would like to know, what makes you different from others, your approach towards life, the changes you have encountered in life, how you encountered them etc.  This can help them make a mental picture about you and can judge whether you fit the bill. Though this seems very simple, practice can come handy as more you fine tune, greater are the chances of success.

5 Time management, hard work, consistency and patience pay

They can never be a substitute for hard work.  Getting that much desired job in Sweden is all about investing your time judiciously which involves searching for jobs, preparing resumes, building up contacts, interviews etc.  Though you may not get a job in your first or second attempt but it really gives you valuable experience and brings out ones flaws, which can be corrected in your succeeding attempts.

5 Things to keep in mind before choosing an overseas education consultancy

Students discussion group - Martin Prechelmacher.jpg

Overseas education is an excellent investment, when backed by proper knowledge and guidance. Choosing the right program and institution is the key. This is where the role of an overseas educational consultant comes in to play. Overseas study consultants, differ in their way of functioning, ethics, business models etc and differ in their size, presence and reach. Many of them have done a stellar job in guiding students in securing admissions to best colleges and institutions across the globe and have earned the trust of students and parents for their holistic services offered. However with the volume of students looking for overseas education increasing over the last few years, the number of overseas education consultants has mushroomed, few with questionable integrity have made their way to this segment, who are cashing on the gullibility of students and parents.

Here are few of the things which students and their parents should keep in mind, while engaging an overseas education consultant for their study abroad needs.

Know the credential of the consultant you are engaging

With endless number of consultants around, confirming the credibility of the consultancy is paramount.  A bit of research on the net  can be a great way to  verify the  experience of the consultant  , back ground of  its key personnel’s , recognition by  international education bodies, awards received, offer letter and visa success rates etc  which  all can indicate, how good a consultant is.

Expertise counts

Learning from ones mistakes are good, but when it comes to education this cannot be adopted.  It is advisable to work with agencies with an excellent track record of placing students in countries and institutions, one is looking for.  Familiarity with the country’s education system, grasp over institutions and program etc.  Their competence,  starting from admission processing  to pre departure guidance etc are highly crucial  factors, one should consider while selecting a consultancy.

Look for variety

A full-fledged consultancy is sure to have associations with a minimum number of reputable universities and colleges and would display the document of association at their premises. The caliber of a Overseas facilitator is evident when  they suggest programs  most apt for a student in terms of budget, attitude, aptitude etc  , rather than  going out of the way to sell  a particular institution, which is a sure sign that the consultancy is only interested in meeting their recruitment  target and not securing your career.

Transparency is the key

A reliable consultancy would be fair in its dealings. The information provided by them whether related to their associations, credibility of the institutions they represent, fees, refund policy etc would be passed on to you. Look for warning signals like guarantee of offer letters/ admission, assurance regarding scholarships, internships etc as these are purely based on your academic credentials. So stay clear of such agencies that are only here to rob you giving false promises.

 Clients say it all

Clients bear testimony to how good a consultancy is.  A satisfied student or parent is likely to speak highly of an agency and can recommend them to others. Look for such reviews, testimonials and recommendation, more the number of happy clients, stronger is their credibility.

A pan India exit exam proposed for all MBBS doctors

Exit exam

Indian medical system is expected to see some welcome changes which were long overdue, towards improving the quality of medical practitioners in the country.  This was evident from the decision taken by Union Ministry of Health and Medical Council of India (MCI), to conduct an “Exit Exam” for all MBBS students, irrespective whether they have done their medical education from Government or private medical colleges.

The Proposed exit exam will be conducted every year. Though optional initially, this exam will become mandatory for doctors wishing to practice in India. Clearing the exit exam will make the candidate eligible to practice anywhere in the Country, unlike the current practice where at present; Doctors register themselves with the state chapter of Medical Council of India (MCI) and get their registration transferred if they intend to practice in another state. The exam will be even more crucial as Students not passing the exit exam, could even be held back from post-graduate studies.

The draft proposal as drawn up by the ministry intends to use the current Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) as a voluntary exit examination for all MBBS Doctors, whereas till now FMGE was only mandatory for Indian candidates who had acquired medical degrees from foreign countries. With the introduction of a common exam as a yard stick for all MBBS doctors both Indian and foreign educated, the number of students embarking on medicine studies to western European and South east Asian countries is going to witness steady increase owing to their world class quality education, worldwide acceptability of degrees, excellent infrastructure, practical nature of training offered,   affordability factor etc to mention a few.

Santa Monica medicine studies has been working closely with well established  medical institutions with world class facilities in western, European and Southeast Asian countries, offering internationally recognized  medicine degrees in English medium and can surely help you identify your best option.

The team at Santa Monica has personally visited the institutions and have assessed their facilities and interacted with students before facilitating admissions to these associated institutions. How to write an effective statement of purpose (SOP)?.

statement-of-purpose-examples

Gaining admission to a reputed overseas institution of your choice is no Child’s play. A well written SOP or Statement of purpose submission goes a long way in ensuring that coveted offer letter.  SOP being a self written document, submitted to the institution, reflects the overall character of the student and can make or mar his/ her prospect of getting an offer letter. A little effort from ones part along with proper guidance, knowledge about the purpose of this document can help one come out with a winning statement of purpose.

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND

1)  Be original to the core

Your SOP should present your original self.  Be original in your presentation, copying someone else SOP can only spoil your chance as an SOP that gets offer letter for some ones else may not work in your favor.  Though honesty is highly appreciated, being superfluous is not recommended. Admission officers are seasoned professions who will see through if your try to outsmart them, so stick to the original and you will surely clinch the offer letter.

2) Show genuine interest in the institution you are applying

Template SOPs can be real spoilers.  So, even if you’re applying to many institutions at a time, make sure the SOPs are differently written and according to the institution and program, you are applying for .Mention, how you intend to gain from the program offered?  How it will further enhance your current qualification?, Your future job prospects etc which will convince the admission officer that you are genuinely interested in gaining admission to the particular institution and  not making education as a pretext to move abroad.

3) No essays please

SOP is no place to exhibit your writing expertise.  A SOP need not be in flowery language it need only be in simple English. You would have ample opportunities to write in epic proportions once you have gained entry.  Remember that you are writing to the admission officer who might be reading hundreds of SOPs and hence don’t have the time and patience to read it all. So as far as possible, make it simple, clear and concise.

4)  Proof read

Writing a SOP can be time consuming but it is worth it.  Read it umpteen times so that you can come out with amendments. Look for spelling mistakes, punctuations, grammatical mistakes etc, as an error free SOP is the best way to impress the admission officer.

5) Get your SOP reviewed

Getting your SOP reviewed by someone else is the best thing to do as they might be able to find out flaws you might have overlooked and can give you feedback about how convincing your SOP is and how original it sounds. Though not experts, they might be able to come out with a point or two, you might have missed.  So leave your ego apart and get the stuff reviewed.

Contrary to what many students believe, a SOP is not an expert’s job, it is something that can be done with a little bit of practice and guidance.  Getting it written by someone though, might spare you the trouble, can have disastrous consequence.  Be very clear that, as far as your admission is considered a template SOPs receive very little leniency from the part of Admission officers.

5 most common mistakes to avoid while studying abroad

      download (1)scholarships_ff104650-82ef-11e5-8fe0-54c761f0e0c7

Studying abroad is an exciting phase where one gets to explore a new country, make  new friends, enjoy the vibrant culture, exotic food and more, certainly the best part of the studying abroad phase, one which will have profound impact on your professional and person life later. However with all the freedom available, there are possibilities that one may forget the basic purpose of coming here, which is to study.  Lucky for you, dwelling on the experience of many who have gone through this phase, we have zeroed in on few things one needs to avoid to ensure an enriching study abroad experience.

1 Getting spell bound in the new environment and wasting time

people-party

Spending quality time with your friends on weekends and having short trips, exploring the country side is all but natural; after all you are in a different country.  But spending entire days partying, chit chat, skipping classes is   not the   way to go.  Cramming before exams is not going  to work  as apart from scoring good marks attendance is  also is taken in to account So dude spend your time wisely. Mark me you will have ample time on weekends and vacations to have short trips or throw a party.

2   Reckless Spending

hen-package-shopping-spree-and-high-tea

Hey! This is easier said than done. Keeping in check the urge to splurge is very difficult but one needs to get a hold on it to avoid falling short of cash amidst first semester itself, needing to call home for replenishing ones bank balance. Eating out at costly restaurants, splurging on clothes, frequent visits to pubs are certain things one need to avoid if you intend to not to tax your parents for more money.

3 Taking study a bit too seriously

Tired student with books

Yeah all work and no play makes jack a dull boy, goes the proverb.  The same applies to all.  Though studies should be your priority, one doesn’t need to be paranoid about it. Spending the entire study abroad phase in side you hostel room pouring in endless number of books is not going to help, unless you are seriously thinking of becoming a nerd. Take some time off, go out, meet people, have a stroll in the park, breathe some fresh air it will certainly recharge your body and mind for your study schedule ahead

4 Ignoring health

exercise-excuses

It goes without saying that “A healthy mind lives in a healthy body. Being way from home is no excuse to tamper with your fitness regimen, though you may miss your neighborhood gym.  A good half an hour jog is all that you need to keep yourself fit or at least in shape. Takes care of what you eat.  The junk stuff, high on fat and carbohydrate is not what you call food,   aerated drinks and alcohol should get a hands down ,  keep a tab on  all these as it doesn’t take much time to move from fit to fat.

5 Limiting social interaction

6083184621_8048d9f3f9_z

Studying abroad is not about spending the whole day on a pile of books or spending hours on social media.   Posting your latest selfies is not going to help your cause. Taking part in college activities like debate clubs and paying visit to local functions, gatherings etc are in fact a great way to meet new people and get a wider world perspective   understand local custom’s, history etc as in today’s competitive global work environment a world view in perspective and outlook would give you a firm footing in your professional life.

Study abroad  offers you an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity so make it count however make sure you don’t repeat the mistakes many have made before so enjoy your stint abroad!
